blown away! by Sophie-Louise on 18 January 2007 5:54pm

the wind and rain is so bad here in lincoln. the road that i live on is closed and i've been told by police officers to stay in my room and not walk down the street! the roof has collapsed in several places in my student accommodation with leaks everywhere! i don't think it's safe! my room is creeking and the window keeps flying open! plus i'm on the top floor. so i'm going home tonight for a long weekend! lol

Well be careful etc. Sure the flying window is not a ghost?

If you feel unsafe, talk to your building supervisor about safe places within the structure. You will need to know something about the construction of the building to select a safe location.

I'd say you'll want to be on the ground floor near an elevator shaft or chimney structure that offers stability the full height of the building.

Second best would be beneath a lintel over an exterior door in a bearing wall. Perhaps on the windward side of the building...if there is a partial collapse, material would likely follow the path of the destructive force - the wind.

I think you'd be much safer in the Bahamas, Soph!
I saw the footage on the news last night, it looked terrible :(

Someone gave me todays New York Times and it spoke about the weather in Northern Europe. I was shivering just reading it.
