there is something wrong with my country today by foreignrabbit on 8 June 2007 8:17pm

all government workers are striking with the unions. have been for a week now. education is at a standstill (except my school! one of 3 out of 36 in my city) and even hospital workers are either joining the ranks of the strikers or staying at home because of intimidation. our country is at a standstill. ambulancee services have been discontinued in 2 cities because there is no hospital to take them too!!

crime is spiraling out of control and corruption is breaking our democratic spirits.

quota is killing our sports too. government wants to revoke all springbok passports if the black quota is not met.

its hard to be a patriot right now.

what will be our final consequence???

Is this South Africa foreignrabbit? I know Zimbabwe has problems.
~
Just checked - yes. I remember a major strike many years ago and I still managed to get to work. The efforts by a few who want to maintain normality usually has an effect on those who don't and the few increases until normality eventually returns.
Try to keep going to school but avoid puting yourself at risk. A good community spirit should help get through the problem.

I see that the South Africa cricket team are to be in Belfast at the end of the month to play matches against Ireland and India. I think these fixtures should not be influenced by the problems you have and if there are any black cricketers who are good enough for consideration in the international team they should be given equal consideration with all the other international level players - quota or no quota.

yeah South Africa

we're a highly developed country you know. but i see us being plundered into the depths of depravity suffered by fellow african Nations the whole time. i dont want it to happen here coz i really love this place. but its starting to get to me...

oh and i'm Martin by the way. from Pretoria, South Africa. we've never really spoken before. :/

I know what you mean about being plundered to the depths of depravity with mining, deforestation, oil, natural resources etc. There is an organisation called Fairtrade which ensures local people get a fair price for their produce. At the prices we pay for some of our goods in supermarkets I often wonder, "How did these bananas come all the way from South America and we only paid 74p for them?"

its not even just a 1rst world vs 3rd world problem. its just as bad domestically (except that you get all the good fruit :\ ) we exploit each other the whole time.

the phrase africa time really does apply to africa you know. if it doesnt benifit you it isnt done very quickly. often it isn't done at all.

We have spoken before. I remember you seemed to know all the Clint Eastwood movies inside out.

Yes, Scotland. Do you have local elected councilors who are politically oblidged to assist and help their constituents? Our councilors system works well and recently we had members from four different parties elected from our local area onto the regional council. This was done by the PR(proportional representation) electoral system which I think gives everyone a better representation at government level. Does South Africa use PR?

I see that the Foreign Office has advised Britons working in the oil industry in the Niger delta to leave as it is unsafe.

Bob Geldorf has also said that the current G8 summit has done little to ratify its pledges on dealing with poverty in Africa.
