A Question Causing Confusion

Is it Charles or Charlie Chaplin? I used to say Charlie, now I say Charles, my sister still says Charlie and corrects me every time I say Charles. I think that they're both correct but could someone say which one appears in the titles of his films? The question kept me awake last night... Little detail, I know, but it bothers me. |

Tough question to keep u awake @ night, dearie. Charles is his official name, but in the movies, he was always known as Charlie. |

My husband is a big Chaplin (and Laurel and Hardy) fan. He always calls him Charlie.
He has an authenticated autograph.
(I am happy with my 3 Bono autographs (one on a tambourine)!!) |

He apparently billed himself as either Charlie or Charles in his movies. But everybody I know calls him Charlie. Here's some info on him:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000122/
A bit of trivia: Carol Cleveland had a bit part in his last movie (1967). |

He was Charlie in public (a more user-friendly name in that era) and Charles in private. |

I've been in a room where he spent the night... not at the same time! ;)
(And I didn't spend the night. It was at a ranch in California where someone I knew got married.) |

I stayed in a hotel in California (forget the town - it was where Michael Jackson was in court?) where film stars stayed when filming. We stayed in Doris Day's room! The next day we went round the hotel and took photos of Marilyn Monroe's room and others - including Charlie's.
Oh yes, the town was Santa Maria. |

Oh thank you! Now I know it, I feel better. I just keep calling him Charles then. It sounds better in English pronounciation, in Finnish pronounciation Charlie sounds better. But then again in English pronounciation anything sounds better. |

Santa Barbara, Anne. John Cleese lives there, too! |
