Marriott Hotel bombing by Wild in Africa on 22 September 2008 10:59am

Do you remember how Michael visited the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad in 'Himalaya' visiting the famous 'Bassment' bar; one of the few places in Islamabad where alcohol was legally served? I guess there is not much left of it now after the terrible bombing at the weekend. I used to visit the Marriott in Islamabad quite frequently up to mid-last year on my previous job. It did always seem a potential target, full of rich Pakistanis and Westerners, with a mixed sex swimming pool, a bar and all the other hallmarks of a 'normal' international hotel. The fundementalists in the tribal regions must have regarded it as Babylon.
Seeing a place I used to know well reduced to smoking rubble is always shocking and disturbing. Just shows that when we think Al Qaeda is on the backfoot they come back to prove they are still in existence and deadly.

It's just terrible. What about the local people working there, just trying to make a living?

Sadly, I am not surprised the place was a target. Pakistan is a nation with many difficulties.

Yes, Martin, it must indeed have been a particular shock to you, with personal memories of the actual place.

I have a friend about to do VSO in Pakistan - he never wanted to go to Islamabad, hope to goodness Lahore will be undisturbed. Though, as you saay, you never know when they'll strike next.
