Exhortations...Admonitions... by bIG bLOGGER on 23 June 2009 3:38pm

We have all heard them at some time or other: "Do this!" "DON'T do that!" "GO there!" "Don't go THERE!"--and so on,and so on...

But,I wonder,do they matter? Do they even register with the person they are directed at? And how should one respond? Ignore them? Heed them? Or regard them simply as expressions of frustration or exasperation on the part of the person uttering them?

Here below are some typical everyday examples:---

"Oh,Get A LIFE!"
"BeHAVE yourself--OKAY!"
"You need to change your attitude!"
"Hey!--Show some resPECT!" [to peers,elders,parents,whomever]
"Act your age,for Christ's sakes!"
"Get the F*** out a' here!"
"Get outta my Face!"
"Oi,watch your language! Go and wash your mouth out!"
"Give me a BREAK!"
"--------------------! "
[choose/insert your own particular example(s): all exhortations/admonitions welcome]

What a terribly confrontational thread. BB may l offer you a nice cup of tea and a lie down?

Yeah,I don't mind if I join you. Obviously you've had too much confrontation in your life and you need to chill out.

Did google tell you that?

HAHAHAH! No,google didn't tell me that,I just guessed it from the state of your nerves. Hey!..you are beginning to amuse me.
I have removed the exclamation marks from the thread title to make it a little less confrontational. Trouble is that any exhortation or admonition is usually followed by an exclamation mark! (..see what I mean!)

My favorite one to say is "Go piss up a rope."

I've also said to my son and dogs. "Eh, go take a long walk on a short pier," or "Eh, go play in traffic," but they just laugh at me.

My favorite is "go pound sand."

I agree with your premise that no one really pays any heed to them. In fact, it is frequently an invitation to do exactly what you don't want the person to do.

Oh, yeah, artofcp. That's why my mum would beg us not to eat the plate we didn't want to eat.
She would prepare the fork with food on it, leave it in the plate, and then tell us "don't eat it!". As soon as she wasn't looking, guess what we did?! :)

Ohh that's a good trick! I used to hide vegetables in my kid's food when they went thru the "I don't like veggies" era. For instance, grating carrot into lasagne, things like that. Totally undetectable.

I rather like the exhortation/admonition: "Get the freak out of my face you mo fo".
