First thing that comes to mind is all kinds of similar stories about Iraq, etc.

But then, you know, I think wow! when in history (except maybe the Vietnam War) have soldiers felt so free to publicly admit to what they've done, without being immediately shot/imprisoned as traitors..

So say what you want about Americans, but sometimes their respect for free speech amazes me. It's almost though the world is gradually growing a collective conscience..

The soldier has to take responsibility for his actions and so too does the sergeant who awarded the 4 days off for their first kill. The movie Jar Head has the same gist as this piece. Wars have such an amount of propaganda and brainwashing attached to them that young people who become soldiers and fight and kill are easily led into thinking that they are doing the right thing.
