Volunteer Placements by propertyofnowhere on 28 November 2002 3:57pm

Has anyone ever done a volunteer placement overseas? There's plenty of companies offering placements in conservation, teaching etc. Just wondering how it went and whether you felt you really made a difference. I'm considering it but they don't come cheap & I'm worried that I'm just lining the pockets of the company in the UK whilst the community overseas gets very little. The company I'm dealing with doesn't seem to want to let me know how much money actually gets overseas.

I thought I'd bring this one to the surface again as its something I'm actually doing next Jan.

The brief:
Going with an organistaion based over here and in the states called i-to-i. I will be working with a charity in Costa Rica called 'Habitat for Humanity', and will be staying for 3 weeks with a Costa Rican family who have previously had their house built for them by volunteers. I will be working on a house with another family who will then move into this one when it is complete.

The organisation at this end seems very organised and 'decent'. The cost is £750 for 3 weeks which covers my food and lodgings, though I had to pay extra for my flight which was £500 return. This trip will give me a real insight into a country and its people away from the tourist guide-book trail, along with a feeling of 'giving something back' to less privalidged people.

With this particular project I feel I can use my construction/building skills to make a lasting impact, though you can do conservation, teaching and community projects.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced a trip like this.

..I think that Habitat for Humanity was started by former US President Jimmy Carter some years back.. think that it has been quite successful.. good luck on the project...and by the way, Costa Rica is a beautiful country!

Yes, Habitat for Humanity is Jimmy Carter's best known charity. They build homes. However, I'd be careful if the project were not in the US.

I know people who were in El Salvador 2 years ago and had an amazing time.

HFH work all over the world (not just US)- according to their website, they even have building projects in the UK.

HFH has affiliates at least 86 countries: http://www.habitat.org/intl

For others interested in what Philson is doing, check the HFH page: http://www.habitat.org/gv/schedule.asp

Have a great time, Philson & kudos to you for volunteering your expertise in such a noble effort!

Thanks guys. Its going to be quite basic though at least the blocks are already made. In some of the other central America countries you actually make the 'sun dried bricks' from mud etc.

The houses are quite small so go up quite quickly, also I won't need to worry about wearing hardhats or having health and safety meetings every day etc.

I'm quite looking forward to having a 'hearty tico breakfast' jumping in the back of a truck and doing a ggod hard days work, then if i'm luckey a cold running shower (not everyone has hot running water)

Cold shower? Looxury! We lived in a shoebox in t' middle of motorway & had to clean ourselves every morning with a freezing, rusty file.

If you have a chance to post pictures from your adventure, Philson, please do!
