Mt.Kinabalu, Malaysia by The_Nomad on 19 August 2004 4:04pm

Has anyone who has climbed Mt.Kinabalu in Malaysia any more information about what the climb is like, how long it takes etc.. I'm trying to persuade my girlfriend to climb it while we are in Malaysia!

Thanks

I've never been there but as Malaysia is close to Indonesia which is a volcanic area I'd be wary of it.

I've been to Borneo and it's a fantastic place to travel. I've been to the tropical gardens at the the starting point to the climb up to Mt Kinabalu and I will definatly go up next time I visit. You have to do this climb with a guide as you are taken up to a half way lodge in the evening and then the rest of the climb for the summit takes place very early morning when its still dark, reaching the top for sun rise. My friends have done it and say it is fairly tiring only through the humidity and altitude with a bit of a sramble near the top, otherwise should be no problem if you are reasonably fit. The company I would recommend you should do this climb with, and you can visit their web site is www.wildlife-expeditions.com very proffesional and safety consious and all english speaking!! As for volcanoes??...who cares? it probably more dangerous going to florida at the moment!!

I was watching Trans World Sport on UK Channel 4 this morning and there was coverage of the Pike's Peak marathon in Colorado. Mount Kinabalu got a mention as there is to be coverage of a similar race up it next month.

Friends of mine who are from KL but now live here suggest that a local guide is essential for this climb, but is manageable by inexperienced walkers. Take care!

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I'm off to Australia on Tuesday for 6months, then going to Borneo for a month. The info's been great!

Thanks, David
