Around the World in 80 ways by 80WAYS on 20 July 2005 5:49pm

I am a 48 year old mid life crisis victimn brimming with ideas and dreams but the one I have come back to time and time again is the 'Around the World in 80 ways' idea.
I have a Pilots licence, motorbike licence, HGV class 1 and have transported myself clockwise around Europe solo (9,000 miles)on a motorbike taking in 15 countries in EEC. I am self sufficient and adventurous.

I have devised the route which takes me roughly from UK around N.Europe and into NW Russia(Moscow) down to the Volga estuary with the Caspian and onward to Iran and India. Bangladesh, China and down to Hong Kong. Over to Sumatra via Vietnam and Thialand then onto Northern Australia.. NZ is next then up to Hawaii.and skirting perimeter of North America from LA and into Canada and down East coast to Florida. Across to Mexico and into Columbia via Costa Rica. Once on East coast of Brazil it's off to SA and up the centre to Spain and back home.

The book will be called 'Around the World in 80 ways' You could die on this trip!

I want to do it to satisfy my own wanderlust and raise awareness about the threat posed to the world by global warming.

Anybody want to come and or give advice? I'm off in Feb 06, as I want to avoid worst of winter in Russia and China. The 80 ways have also been devised.

I seem to remember that there is a solar powered car race in Australia so I hope you will be able to take advantage of this green form of transport. I would love to come with you but not rich enough. However, I wish you a great trip.

Sounds great, good luck! Are you planning on running a blog of your exploits as you go along? If so do let us know the URL so we can keep up with your exploits.
A source of some of the information you might find useful would be on the BMW bike owners club website, think its something like www.worldofbmw.com or something like that, they run regular trips around the world, mostly going right across the US, Australia, Thailand, India and Europe. Might also want to try and contact the Long Way Round team about travel in Russia, www.longwayround.com

As julwis says, 'Sounds great' and I'm sure lots of us palinites would like to be kept up to date with your progress while Mr Palin is 'resting' from his recent travels. My adventurous capability and financial means are not up to scratch now for this type of escapade but I wish you all the best and success with your endeavour.

Don't forget to pack your space hopper and pogo stick.

Just on what pb mentioned, some friends of mine will actually be participating in the solar car challenge across Australia which runs from adelaide to darwin. Good luck on your trip 80 ways, it sounds fantastic, especially if you manage to incorporate environmentally friendly modes of transport into the trip. Be sure to keep us posted!

When you are in Russia, you will have to let me know if you make to the Azeri capital of Baku. I know one person from there and found out recently I have distant cousins there.
I've been to South Africa, but that was nine years ago. I have a friend who left there more recently. Let me know how you are traveling through the U.S. and Canada.
Mike
