New York by tucsonmike on 22 September 2005 7:30pm
I am going to visit the place I grew up in. I will be there from Thursday, September 29th-Wed. October 5th. I will be checking in and also wondered about any New York area folks on the site reading this.

RATS!!! I had intended to make my 1st visit to New York at that time as it's the week-end of my birthday. However, my daughter had other ideas and she is taking me to Tunisia instead. I'm just as excited but it would have been good to try and meet up. Have a great week anyway. Linz.

Well Happy Birthday Linz! Oh well, some other time. You can get me the shirt that says "You went to Tunisia and all I got was this lousy shirt!"
Lots of interesting archeology there. Enjoy!

Have a great trip, Mike! October is a great time to visit NYC (but, then, October is pretty good for visiting almost anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.) Any chance of your seeing "Spamalot"? I'm going to try to arrange get to NY before mid-December and catch the show before Curry leaves the cast since the touring show won't make it to the West Coast and the semi-permanent Las Vegas version will have a half-hour cut out of it.

Don't think I'll be able to see Spamalot, Sight. :-( A friend is trying to book me to be a judge in her Toastmasters Area Contest Friday night. Saturday from Noon to five is my parents party. Sunday, my oldest friend and I are going to the last Mets game of the season. Monday it's off to New Jersey to have lunch with an old Toastmasters friend. The schedule is getting full.

Have a nice time in New York, Mike!

Thank you Linz and Sue. Here I am. I'll leave out the details about leaving etc. I will eventually post this on my blog, Varietyviews.

Well, I arrived in Newark Airport and of course the first thing that struck me were the crowds. Tucson is spread out, so you don't have that. There is a sense of space there.
I left the Northeastern United States to drive to Tucson on my move May 18, 2003. The trip took five days. Flying back in a matter of hours is so different. It's familiar. I knew where I was going. It isn't "home" anymore.
I took a familiar New Jersey Transit bus to Penn Station, Newark and got on the PATH train (Port Authority Trans Hudson). This is a subway system that goes from Newark to Manhattan.
A little history. When there were competing railroads, for a long time the old Pennsylvania Railroad wasn't allowed to go into Manhattan. Cornelius Vanderbilt owned the New York Central and had the New York State Legislature in his pocket. The PATH is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and is the outgrowth of that.
The lower Manhattan PATH station used to be under, (you guessed it), the World Trade Center. A new station was thrown up quickly next to Ground Zero. The train comes outside and you look up at the skyscrapers. It was spooky, especially in the twilight.
I got in the subway in the heat in the humidity. The subway has old stale air, your grandfathers air, my father calls it. I saw all the folks packed together in their business suits and thought, I don't miss this.

Nothing else happened. It is Midnight here. My parents are watching the late local news. I already miss my cacti.:-(

Your description of the subway sounds just like travel in the rush hour in London. I avoid the tube like the plague and use buses or drive. I like your father's idea of stale air - I'll remember that. Linz.
