Vilnius by agroundhog on 27 September 2005 4:33pm

I'm working in Helsinki for a while this fall and am thinking of flying down to Vilnius for a few days. How easy is it to get around - from airport to downtown and around town - given that I speak no Lithuanian and only 10 phrases of rusty Russian? Any siggestions for where to stay or what to see?

The historical stuff is fairly centrally located around Castle Hill- you've got the cathedral, the square and the museums around the foot of the hill. The quaint part of the city stretches south from the square, and the more cosmopolitain Gedimino boulevard goes west from the square. I was at a B&B ("Litinterp")5 min. walk south of the hill and I didn't stray much outside of the historical district the 3 days I was there, but I did take the bus to see the Holocaust museum and the very small Frank Zappa memorial.
