In South America Now... by tone_loc on 2 October 2005 11:27pm
I, like most people on this board am a huge fan of Michael and have to admit that his series Full Circle was a huge factor in motivating me to do this 1 year trip to South America.
It's funny, on my travels I keep, 'bumping' into places that Michael covered on Full Circle.
Last week I was in Castro, Chiloé and was reading the website on Michael's own experience of Castro. Kind of funny.
Bascially, I will be on the 'Palin Trail' as far as Macchu Picchu. Unfortunately, I don't have the might of the BBC to finance a specialist trip to the Pongo and beyond!.

Dont forget to visit the Cross Keys pub on the Plaza Del Armas in Cusco. Quite overated as a place to visit. But a must visit if you were on a Palin trail,i guess. A much better one is an Irish pub on the opposite side of the plaza, heading up the steep hill towards Sacsayhuaman. I went in there and met some bizzare characters, such as one guy from Northern England who seemed more at home in his local, than in Cusco. He wore a scruffy grey suit rather than backpacker trousers and gear. Just needed a wippet curled up at his feet.

Godfather, went to the Crosse Keys pub yesterday to watch a bit of Champions League football. It's alot bigger than I thought, and they made a cracking curry!!.
I like the thing they have where they let you sign the football team shirt (on the wall) you support.
Funny thing is, outside of the Palin community, I don't think anybody really has a clue who Barry Walker is!!. Just another ex-pat Englishman who owns a couple of businesses and happens to be the consulate.
I'm sure he's a nice bloke though.

Hi, if I could recommend two places to visit in South America it would be Santiago in Chile which is one of my favourite places on the planet. It is fantastic surrounded by mountain ranges, very clean, easy to get around, superb food and the best wine in the world. You can go skiing in the morning then travel to the coast for a swim in the sun in the afternoon.
The weekend market in Montevideo, Uruguay is also a must. It is like the old English indoor markets but each stall serves food and drink. Brilliant steaks, sausages etc and a great atmosphere.
