Taormina :-)
It's the only place there I've been to so far. I know it's a tourist attraction but it really is beautiful! The amphitheatre is worth a visit. Wonderful view from there!

I would have to second the above reply. Taormina is probably one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever been in my life. I also highly recommend the ruined Roman villa at Piazza Armerina in the central part of the island, with its amazing mosaics. I loved the Greek ruins at Segesta, overlooking the sea. Also, the creepy catacombs of the Cappucini monks near Palermo are also weird and fascinating. Cefalu on the north coast was great as well. Hope this helps!

Feel a bit stupid, me, an Italian, asking advise about my own country.
I'll keep your suggestions in mind and if you have anything else... my in-laws always had a prejudice against Italy but after a session in Tuscany they begin to soften and with Sicily I hope I'll win over them (the prejudices, not my in-laws).

I had the honour of attending a wedding in Sicily, which was a real eye-opener. Married by the fascist mayor, catering provided by the mafia and good fun had all round.

I recommend going to a small town for a nighttime Easter parade. Troups of crinkly old men in flat caps go round the towns singing arabic sounding laments, bright effigies are carried past in an almost silent procession.

Don't miss the Villa del Casei, in the centre of the island; remnants of a Roman villa with famous floor mosaics (first depiction of a bikini). Best if all is the stunning, if touristy, Taormina on the NE coast. Go to the Greek amphitheatre at sunset for a view over the mediterranean with Etna smoking away on your right.

Even if paid to go there, avoid Gela. This charming town may have a nice sandy beach, but the endless half-built concrete apartment blocks and the stench of the chemicals factory don't exactly pull in visitors. Well, I'm sure Michael P would find something interesting there!

Have a great trip!
