Re: Anyone Suggest a Publisher?? by Ken Dunn on 10 September 2004 8:46pm
I once compiled some poetry which I put together in book form and thought about publishing the works myself. You might even find a printer willing to put your writings into the number of copies you want to sell. Give your draft manuscript to someone who could give critical comment on its suitability for publishing.

You really need an agent first. But whether you're seeking a publisher or an agent, you should try to find other books that are similar to yours. Note their publishers, or read the acknowledgments to see if they thank their agents and then you can contact their agents yourself.

Thank you everyone!

When I was 16 I sent some poetry off to a publisher advertising in the paper, was thrilled to find that they wanted to publish 3, then found that I had to pay THEM! Obviously at 16 I was naive, and because I was so excited I got taken in but luckily my parents refused to pay.
All a con!!

That's why I'm being careful and only 'touting my wares' around bona fide, perhaps small, publishers.

Thank you again.

Go to your local library & ask for help. Possible resources to identify travel book publishers:

"International directory of little magazines & small presses"
"Writers Market"
"International Literary Market Place"

There's also this site, which I haven't explored yet (since I have a meeting to go to right NOW):

Good luck!

Suggest you have a look at the local bookstore shelves and choose a publisher from those who publish books like the one you want yours to be. Also if you're in UK get a copy of 'Writers and Artists Yearbook', or in USA 'Writers Market'. Both list publishers and what they do. Hope you've got lots of photos for a travel book. Some publishers do specialise in this but they will be listed in those books.
