Re: For the Russians Here, What Do Think of This? by geordiegirl on 17 December 2007 4:32pm

I listen regularly to the programme "From Our Own Correspondant". I may have heard this edition - can't now remember.
What I do know is that it is a programme very much of personal views, and the journalists have been around the areas they speak about for some time. And I wouldn't take it as 'official BBC views ' - (they tend to be quite balanced.)
But I do find it interesting, like Mike, to hear other views from real Russians. THAT's missing from the programme.

Well thank you Kisch and Linda. Of course there is good and bad in everyone. Anyone who thought all of one group was bad, probably would not inhabit Palinstravels.

BTW Kisch, most of my relatives genuinely fear Russians, so I will have to pass your comment on to them.
My surrogate Polish uncles (who are Catholic) always cast a wary eye East. When I was with them in Poland, they got me so worked up, they had me doing it.

Mike, I'm sorry for your relatives, but "to fear Russians" sounds like too much of a generalisation for me. But with such views they probably would better not come visit here :-))
I don't like Russians myself, honestly speaking... A lot of them, anyway. But some of them I really love. So there.

"Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who" ((c) King of Swamp Castle). This is getting a bit pointless and rather unpleasant folks - speaking of fearing Russians with Russians. Don't you think? All right, Kisch and I are not fiercely patriotic (funny innit, but still we have to live here) but anyway would it be awfully tactless to say that until recently we had been taught to fear Americans?..

There is an old Russian proverb: talking of a rope in a hanged man's house. That is, talking of something painful and unpleasant for the host.

'nuff said.

LOL! How true, Katia. In other words, I was only pointing it out, not agreeing.

Keep in mind something Mark Twain said.
He was asked once if he was Anti-Semitic. His response? "Jews are human beings. Worse of them, I cannot say."

Remember though, the introduction to the Chat room here about people talking with one another. Ladies, I did not bring this up to insult you. I apologize if any was perceived. Also sometimes, we Yanks can be too blunt for our own good.

Yes Katia that's an old English proverb too! Maybe Brits & Rusdsians ARE alike, as Michael Frayn insists (as you know, I don't agree).

TOLERANCE! is the thing, this is what everyone here does. All countries & all nations have good & bad (how vague & sententious can I get).

Good always to have the friendly exchange of views
