My husband, an editor, asked a well-known international tech star to speak at a tech conference in the US. The man refused on the grounds that he wouldn't visit a terrorist nation, feeling that our actions in Iraq constituted terrorism. (No, I don't want to discuss that.) I respected his feelings, but it didn't seem fair. There are lots of good, kind, intelligent, interesting people in the US. He was missing out on what they could offer him, and they were missing out on what he could offer them. Such a waste.

I had friends who-had-friends in the Communist Party - quite high up - in the Soviet Union in the 1970s - apparently the warmest & most affectionate people. Must happen everywhere.

Yes, politics etc. can get in the way. In other words, I do not "hate" Libyans. I do not know any Libyans.

Qaddafi's government would see me as an enemy, though.

I can't undo the realpolitik involved.
