It looks like there were 2 elections in Zimbabwe, one for the party and one for the president and there is talk of a run off election for the president.
Does anyone know what the Zimbabwean voting system is - other than comments about election rigging?
Further research shows Zanu PF (the party) lost the election.
There were 3 candidates for the presidency and it has been shown that in a run off between the two candidates who got the most votes Mugabe would lose. This I suppose assumes that everyone votes in a similar manner in the run off election.

I wonder if there's any oil in Zimbabwe...
Re: Zimbabwe by tucsonmike on 23 June 2008 1:52pm
If Zimbabwe had oil, this would have been over by now.

What a ridiculous state of affairs in Zimbabwe. The opposotion leader, who won the election, has withdrawn from the presidential run off election because of anticipated intimidation of the voters and expected violence. Is Zimbabwe supposed to be a democracy?
Re: Zimbabwe by Ellerd on 24 June 2008 12:32pm
Indeed, Mike...

Ken - I don't think Zimbabwe has been a democracy for many years.
Re: Zimbabwe by tucsonmike on 25 June 2008 1:45pm
There are five former politicians and other statesmen who have been referred to recently in the media as "the elders."
They are:
Nelson Mandela
Desmond Tutu
Kofi Annan
Jimmy Carter
The Dalai Lama

They need to go to Zimbabwe and politely, but firmly tell Mugabe it is over and guide him out of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is more like a national cult now, with Mugabe as insane cult leader. (I am convinced he is mentally ill).

I'm amazed he hasn't been assassinated to be honest Mike.

That means he has such a hold through his security forces that no one dares. Unless it is ethnic and his people are taken care of therefore, they back him.

I posted early in this thread and sadly, I was totally wrong. The old bastard seems to want to cling on to power with no regard to the people of Zimbabwe ( Rhodesia ).
Should he be offered safe haven elsewhere and just get him out of the picture ?

Yss, you can stuff him in your basement Johnny :)
