If I could put a schwa in the first syllable, that would be more accurate.

When you 'hit pay dirt' that means you've found something that's going to pay off financially. But you have to work a bit.

At Dictionary.com it says the meaning is to get profit or success (to hit paydirt),formed by putting "pay" and "dirt" together to make a new word. It dates from 1856 and comes from mining,as also presumably in the expression "to strike gold".

Where does "pork-barrel spending" come from?
