'Pitmen Painters'? Oh, just your sort of play, Geraldine.

Set in Ashington, Northumberland (Iabout 15 miles from my home town)- it's based on a true happening about how a core of 15 (reduced to 5 in the play) miners learned to paint, their relationship with their tutor, they gave exhibitions, etc. Real skill & the paintings are a marvellous evocation of local life in the 1930s and 1940s.

The playwright, Lee Hall (Billy Elliot chap) has woven into it a discussion of working-class access to art & culture, then and now.

It's also wildly funny, not just for Geordies. It's taking London by storm & I wouldn't be surprised if it made it to the States sometime.

It started at a small theatre in Newcastle, where Lee Hall premieres a lot of his work, we saw it there, I saw it last year ( a former Labour Party leader with a mining background was sitting right behind me, I made myself known!)

I saw it for the 3rd time on Saturday & will be escorting a friend to see it next month. Best play to come out of my region for 40 years.
