Re: Should I have orthognathic surgery? by canaveralgumby on 3 November 2009 5:40pm
If I may add a little more. This will make a change in your appearance. Because of that, are you wondering if you'd be doing it for the right reasons? Maybe you are wondering if you're being vain.

If it helps, I do NOT get any impression that you are considering this for vanity. You seem to be weighing the options in a healthy manner. You seem to understand that it is not plastic surgery, but a bona fide medical procedure.

And even if you want to do this because it will alter your appearance, that's fine, too. There is a distinction between what you're dealing with, and a person who has a perfect nose but wants their favorite movie star's nose.

Since we're on this particular forum, let's use MP's father as an example! If there had been a surgical procedure to repair his speech issues, he probably would have jumped at it.

Don't be hard on yourself, whatever you decide. I think that's what I'm trying to say. I ramble a bit.

Just wanted to add my 2 cent's worth.

While I would never advise anyone on a medical issue, I do know someone who had this surgery, my kid's German teacher. She was teased horribly at school by the kids regarding her appearance which really upset her. She did have this surgery, it altered her appearance dramatically and she was really glad she had it done for a number of reasons. She's never looked back or regretted it at all.
