Having seen whales in the ocean, free, and ones in Seaworld (been to a couple ) there's no comparison. They're wild animals and should not be live in these awful places for the entertainment of humans.

Beth I adore Seaworld! We bought 2-day passes on both occasions we were in Florida. I loved the 'flight' to Greenland!!

Best part about it were the behind the scenes educational tours we went on. One was about the manatee rescue they do, and we were shown around the 'sick bay' and the pools where the injured manatees are looked after (this was sad of course - manatees who'd been injured by boats - but very very interesting). Zak and I were on a tour with about 5 other people, all American teachers.

So it isn't just about walking round in big crowds, Beth - it can be educational too.

(And here is a link to Save the Manatees - we have sponsored a manatee with this organisation for several years. I hope some of you may feel you want to help too)

I hope they set that Orca free and don't destroy it. At the present time they have him in a separate tank from the other whales. He was bought from another aquarium with the specific instructions that because of his temperament he was not to be used for entertainment, but breeding purposes only. He sired 13 calves, and because they are now a protected species in the wild these whales sell for millions. He did his job, now let him go.

Looks like they are more interested in the millions he can generate as a breeder. How very kind of them to spare him his life!

The husband and I are surprised that after being involved in 2 previous (human) deaths he was still allowed to be involved with people.

I think he should be rehabbed and let loose in the wild. Animals who flake out like that are miserable and behave destructively do so to express their misery.
Sea World is to nature what EPCOT Center is to travel and experiencing other cultures. It's a Disney-fied, sanitized version of reality. Yes one would learn quite a bit, and the shows would be good, but it's just not the same and economics, not the best interest of the critter in question are the bottom line.
