In the January 10,2011,Los Angeles Times, staffer Sam Quinones wrote a piece entitled: "Jared Lee Loughner's parents alone with their anguish.."

He relates that Randy Loughner is a car mechanic, and Amy Loughner has a good job with good retirement pay. Both parents worshipped their only son and have lived in the same Tucson street since he was born.
Since the County Sheriff broke the news that their son had shot 19 people and killed 6,the parents of the boy,who are "very private people" are inconsolable.
Amy Loughner: "just came unglued..." and retired to her bed. Randy Loughner will not answer the door, or talk to the media. He asked a neighbour, Wayne Smith, to go to their letter-box to retrieve their mail.

Very good essay, and very sad as well. And what fortunate coincidence for your cold!

My band teacher gave us a day off playing to discuss the matter of the deaths of Giffords, the nine-year-old girl, and the others shot. He said, "The media acknowledges such matters of hate constantly. They make their living from it. If hate were discussed less often, the feelings mayn't pop up so often in people."

"Nearly 50 Percent Of Mental Health Services Recipients In Giffords' County Were Dropped In 2010"

The Huffington Post article mentions that although Arizona has strict mental health laws 2010 saw severe budget cuts.

I have read some more articles about Loughner's parents, Good people it seems and my heart goes out to them too.

Thank you for the comments. Let me follow up.
Gabby is coming along, but not out of the woods yet.
The Loughner family was visited by Pima Community College Police, and there were five reports to them. Basically, Jared Lee Loughner flew under the radar. The neighbors never talked to the family. There was an interesting article in Britain's Independent about the family.

Yes, I will not complain about a head cold again lol!

Let me add a couple more things I wrote, one about protests, The Westboro Baptist Church is planning to come. The other about political discourse and history.

I've read all three Mike. When I hear and read about gun laws and budget reductions in mental health care and immigration laws, I can't say I can come down one way or the other.

The only thing I will say is due to the fact that I am involved in Education, every time I wanted to sub in a town, teach full time in a new school, private and public, I had to undergo background checks and fingerprinting, all at my own expense; the last bill was $54.00.

I am not a criminal, do not have a criminal past and have never complained about having to take these measures because it was me doing my bit to keep children safe.

I would hope that buying a gun exacted the same measures of safety every where in the US.

Does the gun law need to be amended, stricter background checks? I don't know. America is an immense country, I think every country has its share of unstable people. This young man, Loughner, is now part of a statistic. He slipped through the cracks.

Do we want Big Brother measuring our every move though? Slippery slope.

Thanks for sharing all three articles.

Thank you Loretto. Today, I stopped at Gabby Giffords office and signed a paper, left my business card and asked them what they needed.

There were crowds gathered along her route and she responded to their applause. Brought tears to my eyes....
