I'm retiring a year early. by Ken Dunn on 9 August 2015 8:24pm
I thought I'd let you folks know that I'll be retiring at Christmas this year, just over 10 months from what should be my official retirement date. There are a few reasons for the early retirement, the main one being that I want to stop having to work so intensely at what I do and not have to get up at 6am during the winter months. I've been looking forward to retirement for the past 7 years!

That's good, Ken. If it doesn't affect your pension too much retiring early, you might as well retire when you want to.

Good luck, Ken. Is there anything in particular you would like to do in your retirement?

Congratulations Ken! I wish you a long an happy retirement. :)

Zak retired officially last year though he had retired about 6 years prior to that. I retired through ill-health 18 years ago and will officially retire in July next year when I will be 63 and 3 months old.

My two best friends from school days (we have been friends for 54 years and still try and meet up as often as we are able) are not that dissimilar in ages and yet there is a big difference in when we will get our state pension.

Heather is 7 months older than me, yet she started receiving her state pension this January (or February, I forget) - about 18 months earlier than me!

Lynda is two months younger than me - yet will get her state pension more than a year after I get mine!!

I am all for equality, but wouldn't it have been better to lower the state pension age for men (65) until it was the same as the state pension age for women (then 60) rather than the other way round?!

In Turkey (for all I know in other countries too) you can retire as soon as you have done the required number of years which I THINK is 30.

I know we are living longer, but why not let us all enjoy our final 40 years (hopefully!) or so rather than making us work until we drop?

Oh well...

tucsonmike, there are a few things I would like to do during my retirement, none of them too extravagant.

1) Stay in bed till 8am most days.
2) Get back into some gentle hill walking.
3) Get the most from the garden and have it beautiful all the time.
4) Help my wife keep the mobility she has and maybe improve it.
5) Have nice days out in Fife and further afield.
6) Enjoy visiting places we haven't been to before.

There have been a lot of changes in the factory while I've been here, not all of them improvements. One improvement is the fact that we used to build Linx 6800 PCBs. Now we can build thingmy wans.

Enjoy your retirement, Ken!

I make my own break-time coffee at work twice a day and today I discovered my sugar jar had very little left in it. I keep a small plastic bag with my coffee bits and I brought it home this evening (2/11/15). Earlier in the day I had calculated that I would have 27 working days to go until I finished work so as I asked my wife to fill the sugar bag for replenishment I said to her, 'Only 54 spoonfuls please.'

With the Christmas and new year holiday period now over today is the first working day of my retirement although I actually finished on 23 December. I made a list of 15 things to do in the back of my new diary and finished the first one yesterday. Some of the others will take a lot longer than half a day to complete.

A small group of friends at work gave me a drone as a leaving gift and I've been practicing flying it. I'll need to prefect the flying skills before using its camera.

Congratulations on your (early) retirement, Ken.

I retired early (on ill-health grounds) at 44 and this July I reach the milestone of qualifying for state pension (though I won't receive it until August).

Weird to think that both Zak and I will be pensioners !! Although I've received a County Council pension for nearly 20 years, I haven't thought of myself as a pensioner !!

Anyway, enjoy it Ken - Zak doesn't know how he found time to work as he is busy all the time (but in a nice way).
