Sorry to be boring and perhaps off the 'Palin'-point here, but my fave Blackadder series is definately the first one, with the first episode the most brilliant!!

Three of my fave quotes are:

'Run away to the hills!' (then after being told the enemy were approaching from the hills)'Run away from the hills! If you see the hills run the other way!'

'Oh Edmund, it's the lying I hate'.

'Oh no, Richard the Third'.

(Loosely quoted, though I have all series on DVD I can't be bothered to check it!)

Ah I liked the first series too...in fact I liked them all! The great thing was, years ago in History at school, when it was the end of year, or they couldn't be bothered to teach a lesson, we got to watch episodes of 'Blackadder Goes Forth' Very funny stuff :D

With Blackadder Series One, the writers say that it was all a kind of trial really. Edmund Blackadder is the loser and dunce, and Baldrick is the cunning and smart one behind the scenes. "I have a cunning plan my lord". Blackadder II saw the beginning of the cunning and devious Edmund that continued all the way to the final series. And Baldrick became thicker and thicker as each series progressed. The first series has some funny moments. But it's less refined. The humour is more slapstick than the witty comedy of Blackadder II onwards. So i can see why it wasn't as popular initially.

I don't know if I agree with your comment that series one was 'more slapstick'. I personally dislike that type of humour, yet found Blackadder hilarious! Surely it is the fact that he (Blackadder) is so wet and weak-kneed, yet thinks that he is the most evil person in the Kingdom, plus the haircut and well-thought out mannerisms that makes this the best series?

It was panned by the critics, which meant that a major re-think on characters was needed to prevent the whole idea being binned.

Although I enjoyed all the series, plus the special we saw at the Millenium Dome which was 'never going to be shown on TV' - yeah right! Less than a year later there it was! - there is no doubt that the first was the best! And that includes series 2 in which Rowan Atkinson was very sexy!!

Alas...let us sit upon the carpet and tell sad stories.

My ma and me were tearful at the end of the last ever episode when they went over the top. Anyone else get a lump in their throat? :0(

Yeah...We had to watch that as one of our History lesson things... a bit sad really :S Fortunately I didn't cry. I thought the poppies falling were a nice addition though

I went all teary then as well. "Good luck chaps..."

I love Rowan Atkinson's sketch for the Secret Policemen's Ball -
RA: (Taking register) "Elsworth Beast Major. Elsworth Beast Minor."
Audience member: "Here!"
