My granddad was one of the soldiers fighting in Antwerpen, Belgium, and its actually quite lucky (for me) that he was there then.

He was fighting near the Velodrome when a German shell blew up and blasted shrapnel into one of his legs. He managed to stagger back to where he had just come from and told the soldiers there that he had been shot in the leg. He then passed out. They just started laughing, thinking he was joking around, and told him to go back out there and fight. When they noticed he didn't move or reply, they knew something was wrong and realised he actually wasn't joking!

He was sent to a hospital in Wales, where he met my grandma, who was working as a nurse. As he lived in Oxfordshire, it is unlikely that he would have travelled to Wales and met her under normal circumstances.

If it hadn't been for that shell...
