Yes, there was incredible brutality on both sides during the Revolutionary War. Since Britain's was about to oppose Napoleon for domination of Europe, they taxed the heck out of America since we were their richest colony. King George was given bad advice. He was told a war with us wouldn't last long. In the end, George Washington and the other "founding fathers" proved to be great leaders who implored the people to just 'hang in there' until the British got tired of the whole thing, which they did.
Relations between Britain and America remained relatively hostile for more than 100 years. Eventually, we became major trading partners, but my favorite explanation for our friendship was the good work done by King Edward VII, Queen Victoria's son. He recognised early on a war with Germany was inevitable at some point in the future. He used his considerable charm to befriend our captains of industry and other influential people, behind the scenes, so that we would become allies in the formal sense. |
