There are controls, John, but they are endlessly disputed and argued over by monied interests that want to provide loopholes for their particular method of mass extermination.

It is an incredibly complicated situation since we are such a diverse culture. I recently found myself, astounding myself, on the same side of an argument with the NRA (the National Rifle Association, a hugely effective right-wing lobbying association), many of whose tenants I find absolutely despicable. This was when animal rights activists tried to ban hunting with dogs in California. I hunt. My dogs eat what they catch. They catch animals that would be dispatched by farmers by far more inhumane means. For this I am demonized by PETA et al. and I find myself, despite my impeccable liberal credentials, on the same side as the NRA. Politics are not simple in the U.S.

I understand that the constitution is difficult on these matters and know the needs of rural people have to be respected.
It has been a long running debate in this country( hunting with dogs etc)and is really about class differences as much as anything else.
I personally think that PETA is almost terrorist in it's views.

PETA has contributed to the defense of convicted terrorists. No doubt about that. They also have a long-term agenda that wants to mandate that we all must be pet-less vegans. No doubt about that either. Can give you verified references; contact me privately.

It's interesting that the "class" differences are turned on their head here. It's not the upper crust who hunts with dogs here. That is why we managed to defeat the HSUS/PETA campaign in California last year.
