The Chatter Box : Blathering On
A Sad Rodeo Day in Tucson. by tucsonmike on 25 February 2007 2:52am
Thursday was the parade. I was going to attend, but had an interview. Thursday's events may change how it is all done.

A five year old girl was on a horse. The horse was spooked she fell off was trampled and killed.:-(

It turns out the minimum age is eight and she was unsupervised. I know people here who grew up around horses. Many felt this was a tragedy waiting to happen. There are so many horses now and there were 250,000 at the parade. The Chairwoman of my Sister City group saw the entire thing.

I read about this in the paper, Mike.

They also had a photo of her moments before the accident.

Very sad.

Yes, so sad....

And infuriatingly stupid, dammit. Whoever left a 5 year old unattended on a horse in a big public situation with lots of things that would startle any horse should be prosecuted for child endangerment.

Horses are prey animals and are hard-wired to bolt at any hint of something that they aren't sure is safe no matter how well trained they are.

Even the best, strongest and most experienced riders still get hurt. (I don't know any serious rider who has not gotten seriously hurt at one point.)

Is there any legal action being taken against whoever should have been taking care of her, Mike? (And I suppose now there will be a movement to restrict riding by responsible people because of the tragic idiocy of one irresponsible individual.)

P.S. 250,000 horses, Mike? The mind boggles. That's 4 or 5 times the entire equine population of Arizona. Or did you mean people?

I saw the sentence I wrote Geraldine. It was confusing. I meant 250,000 people. There are about 1,000 horses.

There will be a public memorial Tuesday in her home town of Sonoita.

I'll keep everyone abreast of where this goes. This may continue for a while.:-(

When the rodeo began all those decades ago, maybe 300 people were spectators.
