The Chatter Box : Blathering On
The Battle for Turkey's Soul. by tucsonmike on 9 May 2007 4:07am
Anne, I thought of you with this one. It is the cover story in this weeks Economist.
It is discussions of Turkey joining the European Union and Secular vs. Islam and if the military might take over again.

Well, that is the article simplified.

Thank you for that, Mike.

They showed film on the news a couple of weeks ago about the riots in Instanbul about the presidential election. Ataturk (who is still adored in Turkey - you can't go in a shop/office/home without seeing his face staring at you from a picture frame!! Also it is illegal to deface a bank note or anything with his face on) wanted a secular Turkey and it works well. I do hope the pro-Islamic state'ers don't get their wish - it would be such a shame.

Turkey is a very modern-thinking country and would be an asset to the EU.

But, it is sadly poor in its human rights - every month I open Amnesty magazine and there are case in Turkey.

Our very good friend Osman Tosun, who is at present regional leader of one of the parties, is up for election to government in September. The leader of his party has told him that there is a 95% chance of him (Osman) being in the cabinet if their party win the election.

Selfishly I am half hoping they don't, as he will have to move to Ankara and we will never see him!!

To finish, a poem by Mevlana (founder of the Whirling Dervishes) which is lovely, I think:

Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu,
Buddhist, sufi, or zen. Not any religion

or cultural system. I am not from the East
or the West, not out of the ocean or up

from the ground, not natural or ethereal, not
composed of elements at all. I do not exist,

am not an entity in this world or the next,
did not descend from Adam and Eve or any

origin story. My place is placeless, a trace
of the traceless. Neither body or soul.

I belong to the beloved, have seen the two
worlds as one and that one call to and know,

first, last, outer, inner, only that
breath breathing human being.
Mevlana Jelauddin RUMI
