Tony Blair Steps Down. by tucsonmike on 11 May 2007 2:49am

Just saw it on our national news. His last day as Prime Minister is June 27th. He has his seat in Parliament until 2009. Then apparently, he wants to set up a foundation like Bill Clinton and travel the world as an elder statesman.

Holy crap. How do I miss all these life-changing events? It's a good thing I have this message board to look to!

Did it say why he stepped down?

Reminds me a bit of the way in Russia Yeltsin stepped down in 2000 half a year before the election, leaving his seat to Putin... rather effectively: Putin became president in a way before being elected, and got voted in almost automatically (well, of course there were other things to it too).

I admired the man too, despite Iraq ('the elephant in the room') and a few other issues. The area he represents in Parliament is part of my home turf so that also made me have a soft spot for him. Great (for me) to see Geordies on the national news talking about him!
Why he stepped down? He always had a deal with Gordon Brown, the presumed next Prime Minister, that he would, when Blair himself went for the party leadership in 1994.

I'm not sure Gordon Brown will do it better.
