Poland's Prime Minister and the Germans by johnnythemonkey on 22 June 2007 9:45am

There is a European Union summit being held in Germany at the moment. One of the plans being discussed is a change to the rules on the EU's voting system to one based on population. This would increase the influence of Germany ( the largest ) and disadvantage smaller nations like Poland.
Here's the point. The Polish prime minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, accused the Germans of 'incomprehensible crimes' against Poland during WW2 and said if they had'nt killed so many of his countrymen, they would have a population of 66 million instead of 38 million.
Not a man to mince his words, is he ?
BTW his twin brother, Lech, is the President !

What a mess... I hate to say this, Germany is going to end up doing peacefully what it could not do in two World Wars. Then again, all of Europes population is dropping anyway.

Just let us benevolent Yanks take care of you!;-)

I think the shifting Poland/Lithuania border may have also had to do with population changes post-WW2. I was struck on BBC radio-4 this morning that Jim Naughtie said to a german delegate to this conference "We have an old joke in this country, Don't Mention The War!" The German delegate didn't seem awfully familiar with the reference- pity! (But he wasn't bothered about Polish outbursts, saying the Poles would benefit from german money in the future as they had in the recent past)

Poland's borders have changed several times over the years since the First World War but the killing of almost a quarter of it's population during WW2 greatly affects it's numbers today.
Yes, it's an unspoken rule in the E.U,
'Don't mention the war !'
