Official Secrets Act. by tucsonmike on 8 July 2007 3:28am

Can anyone explain to me what it is and what it covers?

No. It is secret and would break the agreement of anyone who has signed it. Some questions should not be asked.

It is meant to silence anyone who works, or is contracted to 'sensitive' areas of the British government.
Which they can construe to mean anything.

There are industrial secrets which companies wish to keep from their competitors, like an extra special recipe for sausages or a piece of electronic wizardry. The patents office gives protection to original inventions so that the patent holder / inventor's idea is not allowed to be copied by every Tom, Dick and Harry.

It might well need revision, now. Husband had to sign it while working as a consultant to Min of Defence (one of 000s)& then when he became a civil servant had to prove he'd signed it before.
Used to cover staff menus in canteens at MI5!

I think a lot of workplaces these days demand secrecy. I worked in a museum and had to sign forms delcaring that I would not talk about certain issues! Breaking it was folloed by immediate dismissal. Not that I broke it, but how bizarre.
