PERU: what currency do i take?? by annagib on 25 July 2007 4:24pm

Hi,
I'm travelling to Peru in August and had planned on taking all my money in Dollars. I dont want to take travellers cheques as i think they are too much hassle. Are dollars accepted as payment or do you have to convert them to Nuevos Soles?
Thanks

I would seriously advise you not to take a wedge of cash - if it goes you are in deep poo. TC's have the advantage of being replaceable, hard cash doesn't.

I used Amex TC's and changed them to soles as I needed, other people I travelled used ATMs, as did I on occasion. Sometimes it's difficult to find a bank that will take TCs (don't use street-corner money changers).

I didn't find that dollars were common currency.

take a mixture of US$ and Soles some TC's and a credit card.
