The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Bulgaria's Abandoned Children by MaidMarian2 on 18 September 2007 10:03pm
I would like to bring to your attention a documentary that aired on BBC 4 13th September that featured an orphanage in the Bulgarian village of Mogilino. The filmaker Kate Blewett who also did 'The Dying Rooms' filmed at this orphanage for 9 months. This orphanage is nothing short of a concentration camp for disabled and mentally ill children. They recieve no medical care, have severe malnutrition, and are treated worse than livestock. I have provided a link here to the BBC site so that you may see what others have said about it.

Seeing as MP has just started airing his 'New Europe' series I wanted to make sure that everyone also sees that some things have not changed since the Soviet era. For most of you Brits on the site you will know that Bulgaria entered the EU in January 2007, yet this and many other orphanages operate this way. It is not an issue of money, but one of uncaring, untrained staff who treat disabled and mentally ill children like they do not deserve to live. I would encourage all British and other Europeans on here to write to write to their MEP's to bring this to their attention. I can also provide a list of the Bulgarian MEP's in anyone would like to have it. Believe me when I say that I have not slept since I have seen this documentary.

The sad part is this has been going on for years. In Romania, a Metro North railroad conductor named Susan Booth (Metro North is the commuter railroad going north of New York City) has been working with Romanian street kids in Bucharest.

No the sad part is that no one has done anything about it. Bulgaria entered in the EU in January of this year which comes with repsonsibilities including human rights. I don't doubt there are numerous good charities working with these children but they alone cannot do all the work that is needed. This is why I've asked on here to write to their MEP's to highlight this issue.
