VIEWER DECEPTION!!! by truthman on 29 September 2007 12:52am
The last episode where Palin supposedly traveled across Bulgaria and into Turkey, hitching lifts in lorries etc, is a deception!

When Palin was in Bulgaria he was talking to members of that sect that were watching the summer solstice, June 21st or thereabouts. Then as he traveled on, hitching a lift in the lorry to cross the border he arrived in a wintry Turkey, even snow on the ground in Cappodocia. Which means it would of been January or February - a good six to eight months later! He may even of done the journey in reverse.

I think that the BBC is still deceiving people in this way to be very poor indeed.

Michael did the trip in two parts; that's well documented.

..think it was even more than that...but who cares, story and photos are great!

Has Michael ever completed one complete journey in any series? I think it's only "80 days" he did in one continuous run. Even Pole to Pole and Full Circle he went home once or twice during the shooting. No? Yes? Perhaps other people have more details.

But I haven't seen any of the new series, it's not playing here just yet, so I can't comment specifically.

Michael has said in the past that the sequence of events are not always continuous. I can't WAIT to see the new series next year!

I call it artistic license because it is not possible to explain every last detail of how the series was made.

If they'd *really* wanted to deceive the public, they would have bothered to clean the snow off the frame... and made Michael wear shorts and a t-shirt in the cold:-)) To me, an 8-month hitchhiking would seem a bit funny, but not "offensive" at all, given such an obvious gap in the picture. Must have been a reason for that, that's all.

Does it really bother anyone in how many sequences it was shot and how many times he went home ?... It's not "New Europe without going back home" after all. Call this a deception, what a strange idea.

I quite like the fact that it's done in stages and presented as a whole. I don't see it as deception.

What would be bad is the fatigue that you would see by the end of the journey!

I did notice the shift from summer to winter and I do agree that it could have been edited a bit better, but it was still fantastic to see cappodocia in the snow, especially as I had recently seen it on the Hairy Bikers series in the blazing heat!

Thanks, I was wondering what that summer solstice yet winter snow in the next scenes were all about. Left me puzzled. I'll just add that a one line dialogue about how the episode wasn't a continuous trip would've added a lot to the viewing experience, especially for past fans. To those who haven't seen the episode, it's not just a few missing weeks we're criticizing about -- it's an entire seasonal change embracingly depicted with the great camera shots they used.
