The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Cyclone Sidr by Ellerd on 15 November 2007 1:46pm
A powerful Category 4 cyclone heading to a low-lying, densely-populated country. Previous cyclones to hit Bangladesh have killed tens of thousands of people. It doesn't look good for that part of the world.

I guess it does not.

One thing I like about Finland is that we don't have hurricanes or cyclones or earthquakes. But when there are news about these I always feel so sad for people living, some of them may lose their home, some even their lives. Makes me look like a lucky bastard.

Let's hope everyone has evacuated from those areas in time.

Someone should do a song about Finland - we need to get Michael Palin on that right away.

Thoughts and prayers for Bangladesh...

240 dead so far. "...more than 100 fishing boats in the Bay of Bengal had failed to return to shore despite storm warnings, Reuters reported." :(

Wait until global warming sets in, Elina. We'll all be heading to tropical Oulu.
Re: Cyclone Sidr by elina on 16 November 2007 1:41pm
Global warming makes me angry, because we don't get much snow anymore! I'm from Lapland, I need snow during winter, at least during Christmas.

Tropical Oulu? We will soon have very tropical Rovaniemi, and even more tropical Salla (and there is always coldest during winter).

I feel sorry for people in Bangladesh, and for the families of those 240 people. Nature is a power we can't control, which in this kinds of cases is unfortunate.

Some fishermen believe it's better to ride out the storm at sea. I've known people who UN-moored their expensive boats to let them drift in a hurricane rather than to have them destroyed while anchored. (These were boats that were too big to get out of the water in time.)

Global warming isn't just going to make things hotter. It's going to cause erratic and intense weather everywhere. So you may get 10 feet of snow this year! Or you could have a thaw that lasts all winter. I guess eventually the whole planet will heat up, but in the meantime, batten down the hatches!

Yes, it was on the news tonight.
