I realized something funny by elina on 19 November 2007 10:43am

We have hear in Finland an art historian who has same surname as our lovely hero, Mr. Palin. I only realized this yesterday evening when I saw this historian's name. I have read her studies and articles but this has never come to my mind before, most probably because of the difference in pronouncing the name. It's funny, actually. I doubt that they're related. Is Palin a common surname around the world?

Well, if it would be a Russian surname, no one would be surprised. Sounds quite Russian too (only it would be pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove... erm, no... like "pahlin".
This IS interesting then, Elina, I never thought of that.

When I first saw Michael's name in print (that's my pre-Python era), I thought it was French - like Gaugin, Rodin, Chauvin etc. So daft of me:)

Yes and that was a year ago! Who would have thought...?...

BTW Elina, did you see the War & Peace link I posted in the "Silly!" thread? If you are still interested, it is still somewhere... down there...

Oh I haven't noticed, I'll check it right away. Thank you very much Katia!

So Palin is common name, interesting indeed. Gives me another idea for future research... (I'm studying history, I get great ideas all the time, and I have probably twenty ideas to turn into studies when I have graduated...)

I went to shop and watched magazines. I saw name Palin, so I got excited but it went away when I realized that it was about a Finnish woman whose last name is Palin. This thing started to bother me. So I checked: there are actually 515 people in Finland whose last name is Palin. That's quite a lot in the country which population is 5.2 millions...

I like that French version. Sounds beautiful!
