Live octopus. It's too disgusting to describe, but it's served alive and by the time dinner is over it isn't.

So when you order this dish do you get choices? Samurai sword or nunchaka sticks, or do you take it on barehanded?

I've actually had rockfish served with it's gills still gasping for air. It's deep-fried suspended on a bamboo stick and served immediately, so it's not really alive anymore.

The deep fry cook has spotted arms.

Briefly, so as not to offend the vegetarians and near-vegetarians: the octopus is brought to the table alive, the diners are expected to serve themselves using their own utensils. To refuse is to cause loss of face to your host.

I don't think I'll ever go to Japan!
