Finland by finnguy on 15 April 2003 9:20am

Yesterday in the chat room I was talking about the fact that Michael had written a song about Finland - something I'm quite proud of, as a resident of Finland. Actually, you may remember that Michael sang a verse of the song in Pole To Pole while travelling by bus through northern Finland. Anyway, it's a nice, funny song and here are the lyrics for you all to enjoy...

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
It's the country for me.

You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland has it all.

Does anyone know how Michael did come to write that song??? My mother is from Finland and I've been there several times...but never been pony trekking...or seen ANY mountains! *lol*
Where in Finland do you live, Finnguy?

Anja, I live in Helsinki - have done so for the past 3.5 years. But I am originally from Ireland. My wife is Finnish and that's how I find myself here. Where do you live? Have you ever lived in Finland or do you just visit from time to time? You're right, I've never seen much pony-trekking going on here, and there's not many mountains to be found south of Lapland.

I've never lived in Finland although 9 years ago (I was 14) my mother very much wanted to move there (my father had died and she wanted to make a "new start" there) and I went to school there for a couple of weeks to see if it would work with the language and all. Well, actually it would have worked with the language (I grew up speaking both German and Finnish) but as I was very sad and depressive because of the death of my father, my mother decided eventually it would be best not to leave Germany. I didn't like the school but I'm sure it was because I felt so bad anyway...
But I've had wonderful holidays in Finland, too. I like the big lakes and these small wooden holiday houses and the sauna (Michael should've mentioned that in the Finland song! :-) ). I like Helsini too but can't remember much apart from these markets with lots of fish being sold! What do you think of Finland and the Finnish - I mean their mentality and such things?

I love Finland! I'm Hungarian but I just love that country... don't know why perhaps because of the aurora bolearis.
Anyway I was shocked, suprised, happy and crying with joy as I first saw this silly but lovely song :)

Hi Dora! Where in Hungary do you live? I've been there a few times and enjoyed it very much. It is usually the case that Hungarians who visit this site are from Budapest.
