The new artworks/sculptures for Trafalgar Square by perfectbitch on 9 January 2008 6:15pm

Just looked at Google news and was interested to read about the 6 proposals for a new artwork for the square. The proposals are:-

1. Antony Gormley. A plinth to be occupied by members of the public for an hour at a time, 24 hours a day. The public can do whatever they want.

2.Jeremy Deller. "Spoils of War" he wants to bring a destroyed car from a civilian attack on Iraq.

3. Bob & Roberta Smith (a pseudonym for Patrick Brill. He is proposing a 100ft tall illuminated peace sign (Faites L'Art, pas La Guerre or Make Art, Not War) which would be powered by the sun and wind.

4.Anish Kapoor's Sky Plinth would have five large concave mirrors attached to the plinth facing upwards reflecting the clouds as they pass.

5. Yinka Shonibare is proposing a piece called Nelson's Ship in a Bottle, which would be a scale replica of HMS Victory, in a bottle.

6. Tracey Emin's proposal is titled Something for the Future, and consists of a sculpture of four meerkats "as a symbol of unity and safety".

I like 1, 5 and 6 the best.

I'm sulking because they removed Rachel Whiteread's 'Plinth' which I thought just wonderful & so appropriate so I'm refusing to look at any new ones...

Does Trafalgar Square need new artwork? Seems to me that it would distract from those wonderful lions.
Is this a "politically correct" way to address the sins of Britain's imperial past? (I just wish our American imperial present had produced a monument as fun....)

I think there was a vacant plinth in T. S. (can't remember the details exactly) and the then-new Mayor decreed it should be a 'rotating' statue on it.
I think there are too many huge statues of dead military types in that part of London anyway, so it was good to have the change.

The Lions will always look good, whatever the surroundings
'Plinth' was an exact copy of the supporting plinth, placed exactly on top so, a mirror image. It was fun & we need more of that in London's public art - still too many dead Imperial types around for my taste!
