Norman Wisdom by Spursfan on 17 January 2008 9:07am

Did anyone else (UK) see the 'Wonderland' programme on BBC 2, 9.50 last night? It was entitled 'The Secret Life of Norman Wisdom, aged 92 3/4.

It was such a poignant programme, as (for those who didn't see it) it was about looking after Norman in his advanced years.

My husband is quite a fan of Norman Wisdom, I quite like him too, and it was quite a moving programme. Although sympathetic to those looking after elderly relatives (we have done it) we couldn't help feeling that his daughter (especially) was selfish. She made all sorts of excuses why she couldn't go to the Isle of Man to look after him - she was gong through a divorce; she couldn't leave the dog who might only have a few years left (oh and I suppose her Dad will live forever?!). Her brother said he couldn't leave his shop - poignantly it was Norman's daughter-in-law who thought it a privilige to look after him.

By the end of the documentary he had been moved into a nursing home but was still singing 'Don't laugh at me, 'cos I'm a fool'. Somehow it brought it home to me that just because you are as wellknown as NW doesn't mean you can beat time (or, in fact, that your relatives will be able to, or indeed want, to look after you in your last years).

I know Norman's story is echoed throughout Britain to some extent (and maybe the world).

I felt quite emotional at the end.

I have just realised that some folk on here may not know who Norman is so I've added a link.

Thanks for this story Anne. I recognize him from the picture in your link.

Fame, fortune and popularity didn't make a difficult time much easier for that family. It reminds me again, that it will come to all of us.

Living till 92 ( and 3/4 ) won't come to us all Pete........only to those, like you and me who have looked after themselves. ;)
