Anyone see this in the news?

i suppose it is of more interest to me because my two nephews and their families live in Taupo.

Dreadful. And sadly true everywhere. Those kinds of violent crimes happen everyday. The hidious thing about them is that the attacker can be completely unknown to the victim. What on earth makes a human being behave like that is beyond my understanding. And this can happen anywhere, which is what makes it so scary. And it is one reason why I don't walk outside late on my own.

I refuse to be intimidated into not walking outside at night but I always take my big dogs with me. The sight of a dog, not matter how gentle it might be, makes bad guys decide to pick another victim.

Several times while I've been travelling and checking into a motel or stopping to eat or walking around at a tourist site, I've had the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and turned around to see that I was being keenly observed by a lone male. Each time, I've gotten my dogs out and walked around with them and the guy disappears. I never travel alone without dogs.

That is truly a very sad story, and so senseless. Murder is always senseless.

I remember hearing from studies of break-ins that dogs are more of a deterent than alarm systems.

So sad. All murders are sad, but what could have she done to make someone hate her so? I am accustomed to drug and gang killings, but this?
I'd carry a gun but...

We've had quite a number of horrible crimes like this in CT recently. I won't detail them because it's just too sad, but there's no way to completely protect yourself around here--the worst of the crimes happened in broad daylight, with the entire family at home. Only the father survived, and he was in hospital and rehab for months. They caught the perps, but I still don't feel completely safe, even with the lights on and the doors locked.

I'm glad it seems to shock people in New Zealand. I feel so jaded.
