  The Chatter Box : Travel
Over-Hyped by alijaybee on 8 February 2008 2:53am
A new thread: what is the most over-hyped travel destination?

I'll start by saying Belize. Not because I wouldn't want to visit (in fact, it's on my list) and certainly not because of lack of sights and sounds. Rather, it's because, right now, the buzz destination for those who want desperately to be on the cusp of eco-travel and who wish to appear in the know of exotic locales is, unfortunately, Belize.

And don't forget Aruba and Cancun. OMG! They're not the fantastic destinations that the travel industry wants you to believe. granted, I've never been to either, but I know many well-traveled people who have been to both or at least one, and they put them well down on the charts.

Niagara Falls - the surrounding area I must say feels like some sort of mini Vegas.

the trip down to the Falls was a different matter

I agree with Niagara Falls.Very cheap surrounding area but the falls themselves are amazing!

Don't want to sound preachy but I think you can get something from most places, even the over-promoted.

I'm sure you will see that in Belize, when you get there - have a good trip!

Yes, I will also agree about Niagra, but lets not forget that if you saw the Pyramids you most probably would not complain about the abundance of sand around? Niagra is what it is, I am trying to recall what was once said about the falls, something witty, but I cannot think of it!
As for my unremarkable over-hyped place? well, though it WAS absolutely beautiful, and amazing, the luxury of the Maldives (we stayed at a particulary good one we felt, the Royal Island)Iit left us with the impression that it was too much `how the other half lives` if you know what i mean? I believe that it was too tantalizing, great stuff, but would not repeat it without a lottery win!
Oh yes, also, Balloon Flights, done one, it was fine, another? nah!
But as already said, it may suit YOU.
