Filming of transport from outside? by Jun on 16 February 2008 6:01pm

This is my first post. To introduce myself briefly, I am from Japan and I first saw Michael's series nearly ten years ago on BBC World Service. I recently purchased the Complete Series and New Europe DVDs, and I enjoy watching them very much.

There is one thing that intrigues me: how do the camera crew filming a transport from outside catch up with the rest of the crew? There are many examples in the series of exterior scenes of transports where no other transport is available, e.g. the ferry in the narrow strait in south Chile, the railway from Chile to Bolivia, etc etc.

Just out of curiosity.

I have thought about that too everytime. But I guess take the next train or something like that? That is a question I would like to ask Mike :-)

Very often, film crews are able to arrange with the transport companies ahead of time, opportunities on the journey to stop, get out and film the transport moving and then rejoin the transport.

The actual journey is not always as genuine as it might appear on film.

In Michael's case, the journey's are true, though. Read his travel books to know that :-)

I always wondered that, too! There was that really long train going through the Sahara, and I'm thinking, "How did the Passeportout film that? Did he just abandon the poor sods in the desert or something?".
