Oslo by finnguy on 20 April 2003 11:57pm

We have collected a lot of points on our SAS bonus cards and are considering using them to take a free flight to Oslo and spending a long weekend there. I was in Oslo 20 years ago (when I was 8) and don't remember a great deal about it, apart from the fact that it was beautiful. Anyone got any good Oslo tips? Any suggestions regarding cheap* accomodation would also be appreciated, bearing in mind that we have an eighteen-month-old child. Thanks in advance of your help,
STEVE

* I realise that 'cheap' is not a word commonly associated with Norway, perhaps I should have said 'not expensive'. You get the picture...

I was in Oslo for a day 22 years ago. What was fun was to take an overnight train to Bergan, Norway. We spent the morning walking around Bergan, then took the afternoon train back to Oslo. The point was the train trip back to Oslo. The fjords you pass along the way are magnificient! Beautiful scenery! It was nice, but a long train trip, 8 hours each way.

I was in Oslo and Bergen a couple weeks ago. If you don't mind basic accomodation, I stayed at Cochs Pensjonat. http://www.virtualoslo.com/cochs_pensjonat/
Great location behind the royal palace. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and it was as close to cheap as I could find in Norway!

One tip: If you are traveling around town by tram, from what I could decipher they redid some of the tram system about 2 days before I got there, so some tram lines no longer even existed (I found this out after waiting for the #15 for almost an hour before discovering it had ceased to be...)! And all the maps they had were out of date.

Definitely take the boat to Bygody and go to the open air museum and other museums.

Going to Oslo this July . Anybody got any
tips where the best pubs are. I know the beer is dear in Norway but hopefully not as bad as people make out.
