In North America - Purchase Complete Series? by cycletourist on 28 March 2008 8:35pm

Has anyone in North America purchased the complete series in region 2? Buying them one series at a time here in the US is much costlier that the complete region 2 set (now only 49£ at Amazon.uk). I'm a little concerned, however, about paying someone overseas and then waiting for my purchase to arrive. Has anyone else bought them this way? I can view any region I want on my PC, but would rather watch them on my TV set, so I'm still trying to decide if it would be worth it. Buying the region 1 parts at $40 each, though (and not all of them), seems like throwing $$ away in comparison.

Does anyone have experience buying them from the UK and having them shipped to the US?

I've been wanting to get the complete set too. What's the difference between Region 1 and Region 2, though? I was never clear on which ones would play on certain computers, and I don't want to buy them without knowing that they will play.

I bought the region 2 box-set from Amazon.UK two years ago. At first I watched them on my computer, but then I found out about Philips DVD players. Philips players are easy to hack for multi-region and the region 2 discs play without any problems. I've also played some DVD's from Australia with no fuss whatsoever. By the way, everything I've ordered from Amazon.UK has arrived to me in Wisconsin within 10 days, so no worries there. For Rev12, region 1 DVD's are marketed in North America, region 2 are Europe. There are a couple of different regions throughout the world (5 or 6 I think). As far as the computer, mine is an Apple, so it was simple to play the DVD's. I don't know how to set up a PC to be multi-region.

edit: I bumped the thread "box set", the Philips player information is in there.

Thanks for that info, g-man. Reading these threads, I realized I had forgotten about PAL and NTSC formatting. So I think it's important to note that a player must do two things: 1. Play PAL format (the European TV format), which the DVP-642 does, and 2. It must play discs that are not region 1 encoded. And the DVP-642 has a simple hack using it's own remote to accomplish that.

This older player, however, is becoming difficult to find. That, and the $60+ addition to the price of the discs keeps me at bay.

But now ... some great news for us in North America. I called the bbcamericashop (.com) to ask if, per chance, they could help me procure the region 2 complete set. They were unable to comply, but after asking more questions, I was forwarded to someone there who was very familiar with Michael Palin's travel documentaries, and she told me that they will all be available later this year in region 1 encoding (and NTSC format). She added that there will also be a complete boxed set (with everything the region 2 set has), plus it will include "New Europe." She wouldn't tell me the price but said it would not be as cheap as the region 2 set currently is (49£ at amazon.uk) ... closer to $200. When I asked for a date, she said ... October 7.

I think my plan now is to try and have a very fun, active summer and be patient until October. I just got the bug to watch them again (I have everything but Pole to Pole and New Europe on VHS tapes I recorded off the TV) and even started watching "Around the World ...". But I think now I'll put that off and wait to have them all in clear, crisp digital format with no commercials ... no tape graininess and noise, convenient chapters for ease of watching ..... I can hardly wait.
