So, did everyone switch off their lights and unused electrical appliances last night?

Oh, shit, were we supposed to? Well, I'm sure we did while we asleep...

Without any effect on my behaviour, I did everything a responsible citizen should and turned off unused power demands.

Was there any measureable change in mankind's power use?

I'm sweltering. I left my heating on all night, left the garage lights on and ran the tumble drier whilst empty. I think I'll now pop out and let my car engine idle for 15 minutes before I go to work. :)

LOL Johnny!

But it's amazing to me how many people I know who are hostile to making even innocuous changes to make the planet a better place to live. They think global warming is a crock and that doing anything to become "green" is supporting bad science and buying into marketing hysteria.

Honestly, I don't know about global warming. It seems like a no-brainer to me, but there are some compelling arguments on both sides. But I do know that there's a lot of pollution that's making a lot of people and animals sick and is damaging if not destroying important habitats and ecosystems worldwide. And if changing my lightbulbs will help reduce the emissions that contribute to this injustice, then I'll do it.

Besides, in the first month after I switched to compact fluorescent bulbs, I saved over $60 on my electric bill, and it's been at least that much lower every month since (lower than the previous year's bills). I'm sure I'd rather have $60 to spend on books or to put toward travel or something else fun than stubbornly insist on giving it to the utility company every month.

Yep we turned everything off (apart from Ava's little moon night light) and I went outside and the whole street was in darkness :)

Unfortunately low energy lightbulbs give off more UV light that normal incandescent bulbs, and it has been shown that most people with Lupus react badly to UV light. I don't have Lupus, but I have a similar illness and people with this also have probs with UV light. Apparently there are filters available, but it is obviously one more thing to deal with.

No I didn't turn everything off.

I was out last night so my lights were off already! If I had been in, I would have turned them off anyway.
