New Europe - Bulgaria by Bulgarian on 13 April 2008 5:04am

Watched the New Europe episode about Bulgaria last night. I am Bulgarian and I was extremely disappointed and offended by what was shown. I can't understand how Michael can waste everyone's time showing gipsies! Just to clarify, Bulgaria is not the country of the gipsies, although Michael was trying to convince everyone exactly the opposite; they are only a MINORITY. Why didn't he show something about the rich history, the Thracian tombs and oldest gold artifacts found in the world, the unique monastries and the unmatched voices of the Bulgarian folklore singers.
I still don't understand why he chose to show only the shame of Europe - the gipsies. I guess it was too much effort for him to find out what the real Bulgaria is.

Anyway, I can only say, that if Micheal is so fascinated with the gipsies, he can feel free to take them with him - many Bulgarians will thank him!

And we are not racist at all, are we, Bulgarian?!!

Surely they have the right to live as they wish to, just as you do?

Live and let live.

Might I suggest, Bulgarian, that the Thracian tombs and unique monasteries have probably been done to death on TV travel shows. Perhaps Michael's objective was to portray Bulgaria in a different light.

BTW, if your attitude towards the Gypsies is the prevailing one in Bulgaria, I don't think I'd want to know about the "real" Bulgaria, thank you very much.

I love to see the grittier side of a country, the Gypsies playing their music and dancing showed me some interesting culture - In Pole to Pole, Michael whizzed across the Northern Territory (Australia) with a vet who was performing a variety of gruesome procedures on some very mangey dogs in a remote Aboriginal community. Not a pretty scene, it was very raw and real. There was plenty of other material Michael could have spun a story from, but adding some pure culture through the epidsodes is a good mix. I think Michael is very interested in people and art which is why he would of found this very interesting and worthy of filming. I doubt there would of been any intention to discredit Bulgaria. I think it is very valueable that Gypsies, Aboriginal's and other minorities continue to educate their children and keep their culture alive.

No Spursfan, we are not racist at all. Gypsies have more rights in Bulgaria than you and I will ever have. All I was saying is that you wouldn't want your country to be presented to the world by a minority group that is responsible for 90% of the crimes in the country... or do you? Oh... sorry Michael forgot to mention this fact, didn't he.. so we all have to think the gypsies are these romantic people who are not allowed to live as they want.

I beleive when someone is claiming to be showing a country to the world that someone should be objective and show different people and places... at least that is what he did for Turkey - showing all the tourist staff, which has been presented on many shows. I beleive everyone knows about belly dencing, I would've been quite happy to see something about the poor Kurdish people leaving in the east of Turkey for example, who by the way number at about 16 million!(up to 20% of the population in Turkey)..

It's interesting to read your perspective Bulgarian - both yours and Michaels perspective's are equally interesting to me. From my perspective, it was good to see that the Gypsies culture still survives. A world without culture would be a boring place to be.

I found the material highly offensive and upsetting. Palin's representation of modern Bulgaria was one-sided, to say the very least. Yes, we do have gypsies, and yes, they do have problems when it comes to co-habitation, just like Aborigines and Red Indians have in their respective countries.

It is a shame, however, that such prominent journalist omitted to mention Bulgaria’s rich heritage and cultural revival the country now experiences only to accentuate attention-grabbing, peculiar and negative fragments of the country’s contemporary life.

It appears that Palin could not be bothered to research the country further – what he had was sensational enough, so he could move on to the next country…

You can read about the heritage from books. You can see about them in any average travel show. I, personally, found everything he told and showed interesting, and I am interested to visit the country and see the rest.

It is a shame that you feel offended 'cause Mr Palin's aim is not to hurt people's feelings.

Michael vas hurt not only one person’s filling with the episode about Bulgaria. There is so little information about this country, shown in the travel TV shows in Australia. Many people don’t even know the location of it.
There are lots of places to see and to show in Bulgaria. The nature is magnificent; the historical inheritance is rich and centuries old. That same town Plovdiv, where we saw the gypsies, is one of the oldest Bulgarian towns dated from 432 B.C. - older than Athens, Cartage and Constantinople. Surely Michael could have shown some of the many ancient and mediaeval remains and could have spoken about the incredible inheritance from the renaissance period. And further more the wonders of this country only start in Plovdiv. Every city or town, big or small has a history much older than Australia. One of the most significant parts in Bulgaria's history and it's nation's survival are the churches and monasteries, which Michael turned his back on. For him the Gypsy-Transvestite was more important than centuries of history and traditions.
Michael Palin showed Bulgaria in 2 (rather than 1) perspectives – quite contradictive to each other: The White Brotherhood and The Gypsies. For a person who knows the country and the traditions there, this is a good contrasting comparison, but for someone willing to discover Bulgaria, this episode would do nothing, but to discourage him.

People like Michael should use their gift with a grate responsibility to the truth. They have to consider how much is known and shown about a certain topic or country and how the information would affect the reputation of it. Obviously he hasn't thought about all this. It does not show the real value of the country, which makes me wonder: if he presents something that I know misleadingly, than how could I trust the information he gives about the other topics?
