Palin Travel Series Finished Or Not? by spursrule on 16 April 2008 7:15pm

Ever since Sahara good old Michael Palin has been living off his past glories, or has he just changed his style of tv show.

I am not saying Sahara, Himalaya and New Europe were rubbish, as standard documentaries I love them and they are both informative and fun to watch however nothing can compare to 80 days, P2P and Full Circle, all three were simply amazing.

The scripted nature of the most recent tv shows has not really set his shows apart from other travel series.

I think Sahara and Himalaya has been exactly like the other ones. It was just New Europe that was a bit different. More serious

weeeellll.... I do disagree that Sahara and Himalaya can't compare to 80 Days whatever. Personally, I adore both. They both have my fave Palin moments. They both have filled me with all sorts of valuable info.
And New Europe is a different thing altogether.

I think it all boils down to our expectations......plus technology..........both of which have changed since 80 days was made! I applaud his consistancy and energy to produce a great doco everytime!

I think it's good that the concept has changed a bit. Okay, so it's fun if the series are funny and not maybe as serious as New Europe, but I think it was the seriousness that made it so good.

I wouldn't want to watch seven series with same routines everytime; that would be boring. It works fro programmes maybe by Lonely planet because they have one country/show. But Michael goes through many countries and therefore has to do things bit differently.

I really respect MP for what he has done, I was kind of late to the party in admiration of his work, however I have now been to two book signings and the guys a legend. I wish he could do just one more trip that is less scripted and more of a journey, thats what I and probably a lot of fans want.

There are other ways for Michael to continue: He could continue to do travel docs, but perhaps not so ambitious. A one hour special, a 2 or 3 hour doc. Save for a couple of Great Train Journey episodes, all of Michael's trips have been very ambitious - it's a huge undertaking and commitment. A lot of time, money and energy, blood, toil, sweat and tears.

Whatever he does, I'll watch and enjoy.

Has anyone been watching Russia: A Journey with Jonathan Dimbleby on BBC2? I have to say, regretfully, it's everything I hoped New Europe would be.

I recorded that, still havent seen it though, saw a bit of the beginning in the restaurant and red square, seemed interesting. I miss the old journeys that felt like journeys and not separate 'episodes'.

Based on Michael's last email, it looks like he's not too enthusiastic about grand tours anymore (can't blame him). Combine that with the rather poor reception of New Europe -- covering too much ground, too many people, in too short a period, and I think he (and his producers) would prefer more focused trips.
