Happy Birthday USA!!!!!!! by peripatetically on 4 July 2008 12:05pm
Let the fireworks begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday to all Americans out there! Be mighty grateful for what you do have and let's not harp too much on the unfortunate state we are in right now. At least not today...

Thank you all. And I am concentrating on being grateful.

Yes, thanks everyone! It's going to be a rainy day in Connecticut, but if the showers let up this evening, we'll have smores (roasting marshmallows over the grill) and set off our hand-held sparklers. Next week, our town will have its annual fireworks display--they always do it late to get the discount on the fireworks. ;-) We had hot dogs and corn on the cob last night for dinner. My town doesn't have an Independence Day parade, so we'll probably just hang out here or go to the mall.

I am grateful that I live in a country where I can go to the grocery store and not worry about suicide bombers. And while I believe our government is corrupt, it could be so much worse. And though we have a lot of pollution, that could be a lot worse, too. Democracy is a muddle sometimes, but it's better than anything else humans have come up with so far, so I'll stick with it.

Thanks everyone! Let's hear it for America! Yes, there are many things wrong with our government and society at the present time but as mrsthing said, it could be soooo much worse. That was nice what you said, mrsthing. Let's all be grateful for this fruitful and free country. We'll be going to fireworks tonight!! :)

It's sprinkling here a little bit, too, but parades have marched and picnicks were consumed. Ball games are being played and watermelons slurped up. Three-legged races have been run and so much more. Just waiting for nightfall and the fireworks and music concerts to begin...

Thanks everyone for your wishes . This is some grande country!

Belated Happies from me, too. It's great hearing about what happens. Smores! lovely word. I bet grilled marshmallows are REALLY good & i bet the parades are too.

Don't have such an equivalent here: Lord Mayor's Show (but only for London) and various local gigs. My neighbourhood had a Festival of Shopping last week, for heavans sake - it was so poorly attended it wasn't worth doing.

Oh--we don't grill the marshmallows. I just don't have anyplace to build a real campfire, so I'm going to try roasting them over the grates in my gas grill. For anyone who doesn't know what s'mores are, they're a roasted marshmallow smushed between graham crackers and pieces of Hershey bars. They're called s'mores because you always want some more!

We wound up forgetting about the s'mores and the sparklers, because it was threatening rain. Tomorrow, probably, because it's supposed to rain all day here.
